Especially in autumn, you can observe up to 30 000 impressive great birds over long periods of time. They spend several weeks resting here before they continue their journey to areas such as the south of France, Spain, Portugal and North-West Africa so that they can spend the winter there. During the day they search for food in the harvested wheat and maize fields and in the evening they fly back in longrowsto their sleeping areas and flat Bodden waters.

In this unique area the crane-information center in Gro� Mohrdorf, 14km north-west of Stralsund, is supported since September 1996 by the "Kranichschutz Deutschland" ("German crane protection group"), which is a working group of the environmental foundation WWF-Germany and is supported by the Lufthansa environment aid and the nature conservation alliance of Germany (NABU) e.V.

You are able to get information about current rest situations here at any time. The team that works here is more than happy to advise you on the best places to observe the birds in the surrounding area. If you are patient then the birds are likely to get closer and sometimes thedistance between them and you can oftenbe less than 100m. In the continuous exhibition, which is open all year round, you have theopportunity of closelyviewing some of different birds behind display-cases. Presentation boards, a slide show as well as a video all give insight into the life of this impressive bird. There is no entrance fee. You also have the opportunity totake leaflets, popular biological brochures and books as well as technical literature and videos. Special events and tours can also add to your visit.

During the other months you can only see the exhibition with prior arrangment. You can also get to the crane-information centre using public transport from Stralsund (not at weekends).
